Chandragiri Hills is situated southwest of Kathmandu, approximately 16 kilometres from the city centre. The hill stands at an elevation of about 2,551 meters (8,369 feet) above sea level. It is easily accessible by road, and a popular cable car service provides an exciting and scenic route to the top of the hill. Chandragiri Cable Car is a gondola lift transportation system located in Chandragiri Municipality, Nepal. Opened in 2016, the Chandragiri Cable Car runs from Thankot to Chandragiri Hills. The 2.4km (9,095ft) line has two stations. The cable car system consists of 38 gondolas that can carry 1,000 people per hour. Bhaleshwor Mahadev temple is situated at the top of Chandragiri hills.

Historical and Cultural Significance
Chandragiri Hills is steeped in historical and cultural importance. According to local legends, King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the unifier of Nepal, had a significant connection with this place. It is said that he saw the Kathmandu Valley for the first time from the top of Chandragiri Hill and decided to conquer it.

Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple:
A major spiritual site located at the top of the hill, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that the temple’s location is where Bhaleshwor Mahadev appeared to fulfil the wishes of King Prithvi Narayan Shah.
A pilgrimage site shrouded in myths and legends, the Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple is perched on top of Chandragiri Hills.
According to texts in Himvatakhanda, Bhaleshwor Mahadev appeared at the spot where Satidevi’s ‘Bhala’ or the forehead fell off from her dead body. Hindu devotees believe that Mahadev fulfils one wish of all who come to pay homage to him in the Chandragiri Hills.
History states that it was from here that Prithvi Narayan Shah first saw Kathmandu and aspired to conquer it. It was with Bhaleshwor Mahadev’s blessing that Shah’s dream came true. Local folklore tells of farmers hiking to Bhaleshwor Mahadev during the driest season to receive thunderous downpours before they even got home.
