ण has a retroflex “Na” sound. When you pronounce it, your tongue curls slightly backward.

It is different from न, which is a dental sound. ण is pronounced further back in the mouth.

Unlike letters such as न, ण is less common at the beginning of everyday Nepali words. You will often see it inside words, especially in combinations such as ण, ण्ड, ण्त, ण्य, ण्म, and र्ण.

Today, we’ll learn 50 useful Nepali words containing ण. This will help you recognize ण when reading real Nepali words.

The letter ण appears in many different positions and combinations.

At the beginning

ण is rarely found at the beginning of common modern Nepali words.

Inside words

You can see ण clearly in words such as:

गणना · गणित · गुण · पूर्ण · वर्णन · कारण · निर्माण · प्रशिक्षण · प्राण · प्रणाम

In letter combinations

ण्ड → दण्ड, पण्डित
र्ण → पूर्ण, वर्ण, कर्ण
ण्त → गणतन्त्र, निमन्त्रण
ण्य → पुण्य, प्रणय

Learning these combinations will make it easier to recognize ण while reading longer Nepali words.
