Traditions:
Nepalese weddings are elaborate, often lasting several days. Key rituals include the exchange of garlands, the Saptapadi (seven steps taken together by the bride and groom), and the Kanyadaan (giving away of the bride by her father).
Puja: The ceremony typically begins with various religious rituals to seek blessings from deities.Kanyadaan: The bride’s parents give their daughter away to the groom, symbolizing the transfer of responsibility.
Sindoor and Mangalsutra: The groom applies sindoor (vermillion powder) on the bride’s forehead and ties the mangalsutra (a sacred necklace), signifying their marital status.
Saptapadi: The couple takes seven steps around a sacred fire, each step symbolizing a marital vow.
Bratabandha
- Description: A coming-of-age ceremony for Hindu boys, akin to the sacred thread ceremony.
- Traditions: The boy’s head is shaved, and he is given a sacred thread to wear. This marks his transition into adulthood and his formal entry into the religious community.
Janku
Description:
Celebrated by the Newar community, it marks significant milestones in a person’s life, such as reaching the ages of 77, 88, and 99. Traditions: The celebrant is dressed in traditional attire and paraded around the community, receiving blessings and gifts from family and friends.
